The WHY Behind W.O.O.T

"Payton is my 'why,'" says Chayna Short, who credits her son’s growth as her greatest motivation. After find out her son had autism. Chayna Short founded Women Overcoming Obstacles Together (W.O.O.T.) An organization that supports children on the autism spectrum and their caregivers, empowering families to thrive beyond societal expectations.

The sense of trust mothers and children feel in Chayna Short’s presence is undeniable. Her warmth and dedication create a space where everyone feels welcomed. “I aspire to build a future where no obstacle is insurmountable, and where every mother and child can thrive and make a meaningful impact on their communities,” she shares, reflecting her mission to uplift and empower those around her.

W.O.O.T. board members Monique, Erin, and Alysia play a vital role in supporting Chayna’s mission to better the community. As the organization has grown, Chayna has leaned on the help of her friends and other women who share similar experiences, demonstrating the power of collaboration and shared purpose.

Erin, a dedicated W.O.O.T. board member, shares Chayna’s motivation to uplift the community. She is passionate about seeing the youth of Syracuse thrive while ensuring their mothers and caregivers feel supported every step of the way.

The Syracuse Police Athletic League (PAL) aims to bring youth and law enforcement together to foster positive relationships within the community. As the Assistant Director of Community Engagement for PAL, Chayna plays an active role in organizing opportunities that help children in the community learn, grow, and thrive.

Jimmy Oliver, Community Engagement Director for the Syracuse Police Department, is a close friend of Chayna’s. “Our kids need to see folks like Chayna, and I am very intentional about who I allow to come in the presence of our kids and our families because we don’t take that for granted,” he says, highlighting the deep trust and respect he has for Chayna’s work and impact on the community.

Outside of W.O.O.T., Chayna continues to support the community in every way she can. Jimmy Oliver values her work both within the organization and beyond, stating, “We make sure our kids have the best because our kids deserve that.” This reflects Chayna’s unwavering commitment to providing opportunities and support for the youth in her community.

Looking to the future, Chayna is working towards launching W.O.O.T. 2.0 and obtaining her 501(c)(3) status, which will allow the organization to expand nationwide. At her most recent event, she shared this exciting next step with the community, saying, “I appreciate everyone that is in this room today, helping me continue my vision and mission to be a sounding board for minority women and caregivers, giving them a place to just be.”

Payton is the driving force behind Chayna’s dedication to W.O.O.T. and her broader involvement in the Syracuse community. “He is the reason why this vision has come to be,” Chayna shares, emphasizing how her son’s journey and needs have shaped her mission to support and uplift others.
